ABOUT THE Y
The past year has been a challenging one for many of our Y families and friends. Economic and financial pressures facing families today have proven to be stressful and at times, overwhelming. Yet during these difficult times, the YMCA of Broward County continues, just as it has for over 65 years, to be the place where people can actively address their stress, positively impact their health and briefly escape the complexities of everyday life. Also, it has been during these times that the YMCA has provided $1.22 million in financial assistance, subsidy and outreach to families in need and hardship.
Despite the economic downturn, 2010 marked an exciting and productive year for the YMCA of Broward County. Through a wide array of membership and program services, the Y has steadfastly impacted the lives of nearly 125,000 individuals. Every day children and adults come to the YMCA to connect with one another, engage in programs, invest in their well-being and enrich their spirits. Programs such as health and wellness, sports, child care, aquatics, summer camp, family programs and special events provide a place in the community for people to gather, meet new friends, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
As much as we enjoy looking back on the many successes, we are more excited about the year ahead. The YMCA of Broward County is committed to three areas focus in 2011:
With Broward County leading the nation in drowning deaths in children 13 and younger, we must significantly expand our drowning prevention program. Also, the nationwide crisis with obesity and chronic illness demands that we extend our reach with Y programs, services and partnerships that can and will address these critical issues and engage individuals and families in making healthy changes.
Yet, there is more to accomplish and a growing number of Broward’s citizens to serve. The YMCA of Broward County needs your continued involvement in order to realize dreams, impact the lives of people and to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. We want to thank our volunteers, donors, members, partners, and staff teams for the faith and trust they put in our organization and for helping us achieve our goals. With your engagement and support, we will continue to build strong kids, strong families, and strong communities in Broward County. Together, we can and will continue to enhance the lives of many people and truly “Make a Difference”.
